Knights Templar breezes five furlongs on Saturday

TORONTO, October 15 - Knights Templar returned to the work tab Saturday morning for the first time since her smashing 13 1/4-length victory in the Mazarine Breeders' Cup Stakes at Woodbine on October 1.

Trainer Danny Vella is preparing the daughter of Exploit for a start in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Belmont Park on October 29.

She breezed five furlongs in a sparkling :58 4/5 over a 'fast' Woodbine main track, under jockey Schemlin Montoute. The move was the bullet of 37 at the distance.

"She galloped out three-quarters in 1:12 3/5," says Vella at his Barn 12 office, Saturday morning. "We wanted to put a good work into her so we let her run a bit going to the pole. She jumped on the bit. She went down the backside in :23, a little racey. She settled into her stride really nice and finished up the last three-eighths in :35 4/5, nice and comfortable."

Vella says the workout compares well with the filly's pre-Mazarine training. "It was a very strong work, probably as good as or better than the work going into the Mazarine."

The Toronto-born conditioner says he's happy to have four weeks between races because it allowed him to give Knights Templar, whom he describes as an aggressive-training filly, two weeks to relax and just gallop.

"The last three days, she was telling me she needed a work. She was touting me. She was jumping on the bit in her gallops and squealing in the stall. All that good stuff that you like to see from a filly," explained Vella. "If I hadn't wanted to (work her), I probably would have had to work her today. She's that good."

Vella says Knights Templar, who is scheduled to be ridden by Gary Stevens at Belmont, will work once more at Woodbine before the Breeders' Cup. "She'll have one more work next Saturday or Sunday."
