TORONTO, September 25 – Owner Bear Stables Ltd. notched its second juvenile stakes victory in as many weekends at Woodbine on Sunday, as Bear Character pulled off the upset in the seven-furlong, $132,750 Swynford Stakes.

The son of Dixie Union stalked fractions of 22.78 and 45.16, before pouncing on the Mark Casse trainee Ballado Dancer off the turn. In the stretch, like a grizzled veteran, Bear Character outpunched the game front-runner for the half-length score in 1:23.83.

"There wasn't really anything left for him at home. He's a fairly well-bred horse who has run well and trained well,” explained trainer Dale Greenwood, of the move to Woodbine, the gelding’s first ever race at the Toronto oval. “At home, he got in lots of traffic all the time. We never had that problem today. The bigger racetrack sure helped him.”

Jockey Jim McAleney, partnered with the Kentucky-bred for the first time, sensed Patrick Husbands (on Ballado Dancer) had a “ton” of horse on the turn and reacted accordingly.

"Patrick looked like he had a lot of horse and was having things his own way. (Bear Character) was tactical enough to be where I needed him to be and make a run when it counted," said McAleney, who also partnered Bear Stables Bear’s Kid, who was saddled by Reade Baker, in last weekend’s Summer Stakes.

The victory, which elevated Bear Character’s earnings to $133,246, was the first at Woodbine for Greenwood, who is based in Edmonton at Northlands Park.

Bear Character returned $15.20 for the victory, keying a $44.10 exactor with Ballado Dancer. Bright N Golden finished third as the 3-5 favorite. There was no place, show or triactor wagering available.
