2004 Sovereign Award Champions
HORSE OF THE YEAR
Soaring Free 2004 stats: 8 6-0-0 $1,113,862 Where to begin. Well, there was a win in the $1-million Atto Mile, a game fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile and a five-race win streak. We should also mention Soaring Free is less than $83,000 away from $2-million in career earnings and sports a record of 13-3-0 in 22 lifetime starts. The dark bay, who took the Nearctic, Ontario Jockey Club and Play the King Stakes in 2003 recorded five triple-digit Beyer figures in eight of his starts this campaign, including a 104 mark in the aforementioned Breeders' Cup Mile in Texas. Soaring Free's other 2004 added-money victories came in the Highlander, Ontario Jockey Club and Play the King Stakes.
CHAMPION TWO-YEAR-OLD FILLY
Simply Lovely 2004 stats: 5 3-1-0 $288,240 Simply Lovely was simply sensational in 2004, taking three added-money victories, Muskoka, Victorian Queen and Fanfreluche, all in stellar fashion. The Robert Tiller-trained daughter of Bold Executive was especially impressive in the Victorian Queen, capturing the six-furlong event by 7 1/2-lengths for owner Rocco Marcello.
CHAMPION TWO-YEAR-OLD MALE
Wholelottabourbon 2004 stats: 5 4-1-0 $286,230 There are a whole lot of reasons for the connections of the chestnut gelding to be thrilled with his two-year-old season. The son of Foxtrail was a three-time stakes winner (Colin, Silver Deputy and Bull Page), netting four victories in all for conditioner Nick Gonzalez. The speedy Kentucky-bred also finished second to the quick Flamenco in the Victoria Stakes on June 26 at the Toronto oval.
CHAMPION THREE-YEAR-OLD FILLY
Eye of the Sphynx 2004 stats: 7 4-2-0 $688,340 She was money in the bank in 2004, the highlight of her season coming in the $500,000 Labatt Woodbine Oaks. Sweeping to the lead in far turn, Eye of the Sphynx had her eyes on top prize, strutting to a 4 1/4-length score in the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Tiara Series. It marked her fourth consecutive win, a streak that began with a three-length victory on April 22 in Keeneland.
CHAMPION THREE-YEAR-OLD MALE
A Bit O'Gold 2004 stats: 7 4-3-0 $1,060,790 An absolutely stellar year for the colt out of the Catherine Day Phillips barn, highlighted by victories in the Plate Trial, Prince of Wales, Breeders' Stakes and Ontario Derby. The son of Gold Fever gave his competition headaches throughout the year on both turf and dirt, as this year's Queen's Plate runner-up was as game as they come in each start, reflected in his career earnings, just over $1.2-million and counting.
CHAMPION OLDER FEMALE
One For Rose 2004 stats: 8 4-2-0 $489,832 The dark bay was once again a thorn in the side of her competition in 2004, punctuated by four brilliant performances, including a 6 1/4-length rout of her competition in the Maple Leaf Stakes, her second consecutive win in the added-money event. The Ontario-bred reached triple digits in Beyer figures in three of her eight starts, including a 102 mark for her Seagram Cup triumph. The Sid Attard stable star is also part of an exclusive club, having topped the $1-million mark($1,047,243) in career earnings.
CHAMPION OLDER MALE
Mobil 2004 stats: 8 3-2-0 $440,213 He's a gruff, tough sort, with plenty of talent, too. Mobil wasted little time in reaching the winner's circle in 2004, taking the seven-furlong Vigil Stakes by 1 3/4-lengths. After a ninth-place finish in the Metropolitan Handicap in New York, the son of Langfuhr decimated his Dominion Day rivals, taking the Grade 3 feature by 12 3/4-lengths. After a strong runner-up finish to Shoal Water in the Chinese Cultural Centre Stakes at the Toronto oval, Mobil went on to take the Halton Stakes, a 1 1/8-mile turf test. He wrapped up his four-year-old year with a neck loss in the Durham Cup Stakes.
CHAMPION FEMALE TURF HORSE
Inish Glora 2004 stats: 5 3-2-0 $433,730 Inish Glora was once again in all her glory on the grass in 2004, winning two stakes events (Nassau, Victoriana) and barely missing out on two other added-money triumphs (second by a length in both the Dance Smartly and Canadian Stakes. Trainer Mac Benson's daughter of Regal Classic, who won the Sovereign in this very category last year, is less than $23,000 away from the magical $1-million mark, a testament to her brilliant career. She now has nine wins and 22 top-three shares from 32 starts.
CHAMPION MALE TURF HORSE
CHAMPION SPRINTER
Blonde Executive 2004 stats: 6 5-0-0 $414,263 Do 'Blondes' really have more fun? In the case of this daughter of Bold Executive, the answer is a resounding yes. The chestnut filly enjoyed a highly productive campaign for Bruno Brothers Farm, taking four added-money scores, the Lady Angela, Passing Mood, Duchess and La Prevoyante. Tough as nails in the late going, the Radlie Loney trainee was a definite double threat in 2004, winning two races on the main track and two on the turf.
BROODMARE
Annasan Annasan is a deserved winner in the Outstanding Broodmare category. Her third foal, A Bit O'Gold, won also a Sovereign Award as the country's top three-year-old colt. With her second foal, she spawned 2002 stakes winner Arco's Gold. Both of them were sired the Forty Niner stud, Gold Fever. Her total progeny earnings total $1,960,493.
BREEDER
Sam-Son Farm One for the thumb! It’s the fifth consecutive year and eighth overall Sam-Son Farm has collected the honour. Sam-Son Farm led all breeders with seven stakes winners in 2004. The operation recorded 28 wins overall (second) for top earnings of $4,768,484 in Canada in 2004. Stakes winners include Sovereign Award winners Eye Of The Sphynx and Soaring Free.
OWNER
Sam-Son Farm Sam-Son Farm is now an eight-time champion in the Outstanding Owner division. In 2004, the stable won 41 races in Canada for top earnings of $4,448,943. Among their 13 stakes winners at Woodbine were Sovereign Award nominees, Shoal Water, Soaring Free, Eye Of the Sphynx and Dance With Ravens.
TRAINER
Robert Tiller Robert Tiller continues his fine training of Thoroughbreds and it was rewarded with another Sovereign Award as this country's top trainer in 2004. A previous winner of the title in 2001 and 2003, he produced big numbers in 2004 with 68 wins and $3,877,986 in purse earnings. The Brampton resident, who led all Canadian conditioners with 15 stakes victories, recorded his amazing 16th consecutive year finishing in the top five of the Woodbine standings. He campaigned fellow Sovereign finalists, double nominee Winter Garden, Brass In Pocket and two-year-old filly winner, Simply Lovely.
JOCKEY
Todd Kabel Kabel, who had three Sovereign Award Outstanding jockey honours (1992, 1995 and 2003) on his resume going into 2004, capped a truly remarkable year by equaling the record for most stakes wins in a season with 36 on the last day of the 2004 Thoroughbred meet and earning another Sovereign. The Manitoba native also led the Woodbine colony in wins (156) and purse earnings ($10,467,572), for the second consecutive campaign. Among his many highlights were wins in the Atto Mile with Soaring Free and the Labatt Woodbine Oaks with Eye of the Sphynx, both Sovereign Award champions.
APPRENTICE JOCKEY
Corey Fraser Fraser was money-in-the-bank in 2004, his first full season at the races, a year in which the highly touted rider racked up 66 wins (ranking eighth at Woodbine) and $3.4-million in purse earnings. He teamed with longshot Velvet Snow to take the Ontario Damsel Stakes on July 10 at the Toronto oval, one of many smart rides from the 27-year-old.
