Jeremes Jet soars in Metro Pace

CAMPBELLVILLE, September 17…In a thrilling duel to the wire, Jeremes Jet and driver Paul MacDonell outbattled Palone Ranger and driver Dave Miller the length of the stretch to win the $1 million Metro Pace by one-quarter length, Saturday night at Mohawk Racetrack.

The Metro, the richest race on the continent for two-year-old pacers, brought together 10 of the best two year-olds in training and befitting a million dollar race, it proved a battle royale from the get-go.

Perfect Union, at 78-1, rocketed out of the eight-hole to take the field to the opening quarter in a blistering :26.2. Then it was Impeccable’s turn to take over, as he reached the half in :55.2.

At that point, MacDonell and Jeremes Jet turned on the afterburners and flew up from third to take command, but were immediately challenged by the even-money choice Palone Ranger as they passed the three-quarters in 1:23 and straightened for home.

However, summoning the qualities of a potential champion, Jeremes Jet, the still undefeated son of Western Hanover-Ohyouprettything, refused to yield, as the two race favourites, who had both impressively scored in last week’s Metro eliminations, duked it out to the wire. At the finish, Jeremes Jet, the 2-1 second choice, had won his third career race in a life best 1:50.4, while Perfect Union was a further four and one-quarter lengths back in third.

“He’s a quality animal,” stated MacDonell, who also won the 1997 Metro with longshot Rustler Hanover for the late Bill Wellwood. “When he steps on the track, you can just see he’s got presence. He looks like he’s got the parts when the race starts too. He certainly did (prove himself tonight), especially considering the fact that it’s only his third lifetime start. He’s got a great career ahead of him.

“I was worried,” continued MacDonell. “That colt (Palone Ranger) just never went away. It was a gritty effort by him. We had to go right to the well to get it all done. It was real deep in the lane by the time we had it for sure.”

Trained by Chicago-based Tom Harmer for the Genesis Racing Stable of Plainfield, Illinois, Jeremes Jet picked up a cheque of $500,000 for the victory, to go with the $22,250 he banked in his first two outings.

Jeremes Jet paid $6.10, $3.50 and $3.20, combining with Palone Ranger ($2.30, $2.20) for a $10.80 (2-3) exactor. A 2-3-8 (Perfect Union, $13.80 to show) triactor was worth $240.30, while a $1 Superfecta (2-3-8-4 (Winslow Gambler) returned $1,179.50.
