Peaceful Way glides to victory in Breeders Crown

CAMPBELLVILLE, September 3...Peaceful Way turned in a brilliant performance Saturday night at Mohawk Racetrack, winning the $302,500 Breeders Crown Mare Trot by 1 1/4-lengths over a closing Mystical Sunshine.

Sent postward the overwhelming 2-5 choice, the four-year-old daughter of Angus Hall allowed last year's Crown winner Housethatruthbuilt, then Windylane Hanover to set the early fractions of :27.3 for the quarter and :56 for the half for Trevor Ritchie.

Then, fashioning an explosive burst going into the far turn, Peaceful Way, who came into Saturday's action as the number one-ranked standardbred in the Hambletonian Society/Breeders Crown poll, brushed to the front, reaching three-quarters in 1:24.4, then cruised through the lane to the wire in 1:53.1. Housethatruthbuilt rallied again to finish third.

The popular victory kept her record unblemished for 2005, now a perfect seven-for-seven, as she cemented her bid to become Canada's Harness Horse of the Year. So far, it's been a banner season, with wins in the Armbro Flight and Classic Series and a world record-equalling 1:51.4 mile along the way prior to tonight's coronation.

But winning is nothing new for the Dave Tingley co-owned and trained mare, as she's now visited the winner's circle 26 times in 32 career outings.

The triumph, her 10th in a row dating back to last October, also erased some painful memories for her connections from previous Breeders Crowns in which Peaceful Way had participated. Last year, she finished eighth to rival Housethatruthbuilt in the final after making a break at the start and, as a two-year-old, she went off-stride in her elimination and failed to even make the
final. Still, she managed to snare O'Brien Awards as Canada's division champion in both years.

"I'm speechless right now. It's probably the most nervous I've been watching a race," said Tingley, a Halifax native who now resides in Guelph. "I guess just because this race has eluded us two years in a row. Trevor did a great job. He was patient. She's a great horse, just an amazing mare. She came into this race fresh and healthy. Now that this race is over, we can look forward to, hopefully, the Maple Leaf Trot. (But), you know just to get the Breeders Crown
under her belt is a great accomplishment."

A career earner of over $2.1 million, Peaceful Way added $151,250 to her bankroll for owners Goin My Way Stable of Holland, Pennsylvania, breeder Angie Stiller of Arva, Ontario, Tingley and a trio of Torontonians, Marvin Katz, Al Libfeld and Sam Goldband.

The Mare Trot was the first of four Breeders Crown finals on the night, worth more than $2.3 million, as the best male and female older pacers and trotters on the continent were showcased.

Loyal Opposition was an authoritative 1 1/2-length winner of the $401,115 Mare Pace event.

George Brennan drove the bay five-year-old daughter of Cole Muffler to her 38th career victory for trainer Ervin Miller and owner Daniel Waxman of Ancaster, Ontario.

Glowing Report was second, 1 1/2-lengths in front of odds-on choice Burning Point.

Loyal Opposition, who paced the mile in 1:51-flat, paid $12.00 to win.

Boulder Creek defended his Breeders Crown championship in the $605,000 Open Pace with a one-length tally over Georgia Pacific and Mypanmar.

Brian Sears guided the five-year-old brown son of Pacific Rocket to the victory in 1:49.1

Mark Silva trains the brown for Clifford Siegel, Lee Wasserman and John Fedora of New York City.

Boulder Creek, now a 25-time winner, paid $3.80 to win.

In the $968,000 Breeders Crown Open Trot, Mr Muscleman went gate-to-wire as the odds-on favourite.

Sand Vic and Elegant Man were second and third, respectively.

Ron Pierce drove the gelded Muscles Yankee five-year-old to the 5 1/2-length win for trainer Mike Vanderkamp and owner Adam Victor and Son Stable of New York City.

Mr Muscleman paid $3.40 to win, trotting the mile in 1:52-flat.
