Year 2004

It's another season and the Champions Off-Track Wagering (Urban Canoe Club) Shogun Warriors Dragon Boat Team is back in training. The season didn't end for 15 members after the last race in September 2003.  Instead, they started a rigorous technical training program in November 2003 (with Assistant Coach Blake Hera) that ended in February 2004.

In December 2003, the Urban Canoe Club hired a new coach, Kevin Stott. He is one of Canada's premier flat-water paddlers with over 30 years of paddling and coaching experience. Kevin has represented Canada in numerous international flat-water and dragon boat events. He is the Head Coach of the Toronto's Balmy Beach Canoe Club women's canoeing program and prior to that was a coach with the Mississauga Canoe Club. The team is extremely excited to have Kevin as our new coach.

Seven Races in 2004
The team will be participating in 7 races in 2004. There will be three races in Toronto, two in Welland, one in Pickering and Montreal. The club will have a full summer of racing.

Full team practices started in February, at the Scadding Court Community Centre Swimming Pool and will continue for 10 weeks until April 19 when the team begins the on-lake practices for the season (yes, it will be cold).

Membership:
The Shogun Warriors recruit members based on 3 criteria. In order of importance:

1: Attitude
2: Fitness Level
3: Paddling Experience

The Shogun team will have 6 new members this year, who were recruited based on the 3 criteria mentioned.

Community Involvement:
We are very active in our community assisting many agencies and organizations in Toronto, including the Harbourfront Community Centre, The Gerard Resource Centre, Children's Aid Society, Big Sisters and Brothers, homeless shelters and patients of the Humber River Regional Hospital Renal Unit and Sunnybrook Hospital Veterans Wing, through our community group Caring In Action. Woodbine Entertainment Group was a partner in Caring In Action 10th Annual Kids Christmas Party in December 2003.  At that Christmas party, we were able to entertain over 300 children from various low income and at risk households and their families. Each child and parent received a Christmas gift bag at the end of the event.

Expectations in 2004
With our new Coach, and his years of coaching experience and winning attitude, we believe this will be the best season yet for the Champions Off-Track Wagering Shogun Warriors team.  Our strength comes from the great attitude and commitment that all our members are displaying already within our first set of practices.  You can feel the excitement, determination, and team unity that will take us all on our winning journey this year! We are also extremely excited to be again representing Champions Off-Track Wagering.  This partnership will be celebrated by having the Champions Flag and banner proudly displayed at all the events Shogun enters in.

Yeaaa Champions!!! Yeaaa Shogun!!!
