The Sovereign Awards

The Sovereign Awards were instituted in the Spring of 1976 in order to honour Canada's top Thoroughbred performers.  The divisional leaders in each category are voted by selected journalists, racing secretaries and employees of the Daily Racing Form across Canada.  Horses, regardless of place of birth, must start three times in Canada.


Sovereign Awards are presented in the following categories: Film/Video/Broadcast - Feature Story - Newspaper Story - Photograph.

Submission for the media awards must be: of Canadian Thoroughbred racing and breeding content; published/aired between November 1st of the previous year and October 31st of the current year; and received in The Jockey Club of Canada office no later than midnight on October 31st of the year in which the award is presented.

Contestants in the media categories are limited to one submission per category.  The event that more than one submission is received in any category, the author, photographer or producer/director will be asked to decide which submission should be entered.

The responsibility for juding the media awards will be given to the individuals who: have experience in the discipline they are judging; have been involved or aquainted with Thoroughbred racing and breeding; have no direct affiliation with any entrants within the category.
